Thurles Regional Arts Centre – Project Update

The site of the Thurles Regional Arts Centre and new Branch Library is a hive of activity as we anticipate its opening to the public later this summer. The building phase of the project is coming towards an end, the crane is gone, entrance steps are in construction and we eagerly await the arrival of all of the theatre equipment, seating, lighting, sound equipment, projection equipment etc. which is due to be in place by mid-summer.

Behind the scenes we are planning for operation and the Board of Thurles Regional Arts Centre is delighted to announce the appointment of Claudia Woolgar as Artistic Director.  In welcoming Claudia to the post, Chairperson of Thurles Regional Arts Centre, Councillor Mae Quinn expressed the boards delight in “attracting a person of Claudia’s experience and calibre to lead the artistic and community development of a project which is a much anticipated resource for the town and County and assured Claudia of the support of the Board who have been working over a number of years to ensure the best of facilities for the arts for the people of Thurles and North Tipperary”.

Appointment of Claudia Woolgar as Artistic Director

Claudia Woolgar was Director of Kilkenny Arts Festival 2003 and 2004, during which time the Festival commissioned and produced site specific work and initiated an innovative community outreach programme. Prior to her move to Ireland she worked in The Netherlands as an international theatre producer. She ran two producing companies, Offshore Cultural Projects and (i)tex, presenting the work of such directors as Rimas Tuminas (Lithuania), Silviu Purcarete (Romania),  Lev Dodin (Russia) and Declan Donnellan (UK). (i)tex was specifically set up to work with the Baltic States, and involved touring and co-producing work, such as Tuminas’ The Seagull with Dundee Repertory Theatre.

From 1994 – 1997, based in London (with a seven month stint living in Romania), she ran a British-Romanian theatre exchange programme called Noroc. This sought to work bi-laterally between the two countries, and involved touring the work of Romanian directors in the UK, and producing collaborative projects such as Robert Delaware’s production of Pinocchio in Venice staged at the National Theatre of Craiova, Romania. Noroc also ran a British theatre festival in Bucharest, during which work by authors such as Howard Barker, Sarah Kane and Ed Thomas was presented to Romanian audiences.

Woolgar also ran a three year training placement programme with the Caucasus region for Visiting Arts in London, which arranged month long placements in UK arts organisations for young arts managers from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Her first professional job was as a theatre critic, specialising in Eastern European theatre.

Woolgar is on the Board of Directors of Theatre Forum, and since leaving Kilkenny has been involved in a range of projects, among them drawing up an industry response paper for the Arts Council on touring needs in Ireland, assisting Landmark Productions with their production of Dandelions, and presenting an international production of Twelfth Night at the Bath International Shakespeare Festival.

I am absolutely thrilled at the appointment to run the arts centre in Thurles. It is such an exciting opportunity – to open a new building, and to ensure that artistically it offers the very best quality work and sits at the heart of its community, welcoming and accessible to all. It is a fantastic building, and I look forward to working with the people in Thurles and beyond to establish an arts centre which is a flagship venue for excellence, innovation and professional arts practice.”-Claudia Woolgar, Artistic Director, Thurles Regional Arts Centre

Artist in the Community Scheme 2006

Twice yearly, the Arts Council offers grants to enable artists and community groups to work together on projects. The scheme covers all art forms. The Artist in the Community Scheme is managed by CREATE. The aim of the scheme is to encourage intense collaboration between community groups and artists. The focus of the collaboration must be a project in which the members of the community group and the artists work together in order to realise an artistic project or an event. It is essential that consultation take place between the artist and the community group, so that both parties are involved in deciding on the nature of the project.Group ownership of the art should be maintained at every stage. Phase One, the research and development award of up to €1,000, gives artists an opportunity to explore and develop a project in a community context. Phase Two is open to community organisations or groups who are planning a project of between 6 weeks and 5 months with a maximum award of €5000, and those who are planning a project of between 6 months and 9 months with a maximum award of €10,000.
